چکیده

The Victorian bushfires in February 2009 were one of the most terrifying recent natural disasters in Australia. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an all–weather remote observation system which can penetrate through cloud and smoke to image the Earth’s surface at anytime. Hence, it is an ideal tool for change detection, and in particular for fire monitoring. This paper describes the use of ALOS/PALSAR multi-temporal images and interferometric coherence data to study the 2009 Victorian Bushfires. Two areas where several ALOS PALSAR images had been acquired before, during and after the fire period were selected for this study. Landsat TM images acquired for a similar period over the same areas were used for validation purposes. Various techniques were applied to detect burnt areas, including backscatter intensity difference, coherence analysis and Principal Component Analysis. However, none of these methods could clearly locate the fire-affected regions on their own. A combined approach was significantly better. Burnt scars extraction was carried out using Maximum Likelihood, Artificial Neural Network, and Support Vector Machine classification techniques, and the results were compared to identify the best classifier – that produced the most accurate fire damage map.

Interferometric ALOS PALSAR Fine Beam Single/Dual, multi-temporal ENVISAT ASAR Alternating Polarization, and Landsat-5 TM/-7 ETM+ data are used for the generation of land cover and change maps. In synthesis, the product generation foresees two main steps: The first one consists in a rigorous data pre-processing, including interferometric processing (PALSAR), geometric / radiometric calibration ...

Slope Superficial Displacement Monitoring by Small Baseline SAR Interferometry Using Data from L-band ALOS PALSAR and X-band TerraSAR: A Case Study of Hong Kong, China

Owing to the development of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) platforms, and in particular the increase in the availability of multi-source (multi-band and multi-resolution) data, it is now feasible to design a surface displacement monitoring application using multi-temporal SAR interferometry (MT-InSAR). Landslides have high socio-economic impacts in many countries because of potential...

Assessment of radar interferometry performance for ground subsidence monitoring due to underground mining

This paper describes the results from the recently launched SAR satellites for the purpose of subsidence monitoring over underground coal mine sites in the state of New South Wales, Australia, using differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) technique. The quality of the mine subsidence monitoring results is mainly constrained by noise due to the spatial and temporal decorre...

Seasonality of Alos Palsar Interferometric Coherence and Interferometric Phase in Central Siberia and Its Implication on Forest Parameter Retrieval

The boreal zone is characterised by unique environmental conditions, which need to be considered throughout the SAR data exploration. During winter the trees are frozen and thus almost transparent for the incoming radar wave. The backscatter from the trees is significantly reduced, as is the contrast between forest and non-forest areas. However, the environmental conditions are very stable. Due...
